FDA's 2025 Antimicrobial Documentation Requirements: Key Changes for Veterinary Practices



Starting January 2025, the FDA is implementing new requirements for tracking antimicrobial usage in veterinary practices. Here are the essential updates you need to know:


Documentation Changes

Medical records for antimicrobial prescriptions will need to include:

  • Specific reason for antibiotic selection

  • Detailed condition description

  • Treatment duration

  • Supporting diagnostic information

Example record format: Current: "Prescribed Clavamox for infection" 2025 Requirement: "Prescribed Clavamox for confirmed skin infection based on culture results, 14-day course, follow-up [date]"


Practice Preparation Steps

  1. Review current prescription documentation methods
